Will Roger Federer Reach Elite Status Ever Again?
on Feb.16, 2011, under Australian Open Odds
The tennis betting online world has been in constant flux over the last few months as many fans ponder the future of the legendary Roger Federer. Last month Roger Federer shocked the sports betting world when he lost the Novak Djokovic, not because Djokovic is a bad player, but rather because he lost in straight sets. What’s more, after that defeat, when asked what is next for the big Swiss, Federer stated ‘We’ll see in six months’.
With the loss at the Australian Open, 2011 became the first year since 2003, that Federer was not the defending champion at any of the major Grand Slam tournaments. Making all of his fans and critics wonder, will Federer ever return to elite status?
Perhaps the most astounding thing about the Federer demise is not that he is no longer the defending champion at any of the four major Grand Slam tournaments, but rather he hasn’t even made it to the final and lost. The Federer demise began almost right around the time arch rival Rafael Nadal returned to the ATP tournament. Nadal returned at the French Open in Rolland Garros, Paris, France, and Federer was consequently eliminated by Swede Robin Soderling.
Nadal who returned from knee surgery in 2009, came back in 2010 with a vengeance, as he would win the French Open, followed by Wimbledon and the US Open, before losing at Melbourne last month. Federer on the other hand, after the defeat to Soderling, was eliminated at all three of the other tournaments, by the semi-finals.
If Roger Federer’s struggles have told us anything, it is that all good things must come to an end. Similar to the New York Yankees, Manchester United, and the New England Patriots, Roger Federer was considered a dynasty in the world of sports. It now seems that Federer may be on the verge of retirement, as opposed to creating a new dynasty.
Is Roger Federer’s Time Atop The ATP Rankings Over?
on Feb.15, 2011, under Australian Open Odds
Sports betting enthusiasts primarily handicapping professional tennis witnessed many highs and lows for Roger Federer in 2010 and the beginning of 2011. On the one hand, betting online handicappers were able to see Federer dominate the tennis ranks while rival Rafael Nadal recovered from knee surgery throughout the beginning of 2010. However, once Nadal returned, it appeared that Federer’s game started to decline. Most recently, Federer was defeated at the Australian Open in the semi finals a bitter end to a rather forgettable last seven months. Today we speculate on whether the Federer Era of tennis is coming to a close?
The Australian Open was the climax of Roger Federer’s recent collapse atop the ATP tennis rankings. Going into the tournament, Federer was the defending champion, as he had knocked off Brit Andy Murray in the 2010 final. However, in the semi finals, Federer took on Novak Djokovic a singles star who was the last man to defeat Federer in the tournament. Djokovic returned to 2008 form, when he appeared at his best, and was able to defeat the legendary Federer. The win for Djokovic essentially represented a changing of the guard, as Djokovic’s career appears to be reaching new levels, while Roger Federer looks to be reconsidering his career in tennis.
For the Roger Federer critics a possible retirement by the legendary tennis star is long overdue. It was three years ago in 2008, the first time Federer was defeated at Melbourne by Djokovic that the critics believed the end of the Federer era was coming. Fast forward to the present, when Novak Djokovic defeated Federer in straight sets and Melbourne and many fans are beginning to believe the critics may have been on to something in 2008. One thing is certain, with Roger Federer’s struggles beginning last May at Rolland Garros, it seems that the tennis Gods are finally turning their favor to someone new.
Tennis Rivalries
on Feb.09, 2011, under Australian Open Odds
Last month’s Australian Open was supposed to be a sports betting coming out party for Rafael Nadal, one of tennis’s leading stars. Unofficially, a Nadal victory at Melbourne would have allowed the youthful Spaniard to win all four of tennis’s grand slam online betting titles. However, he along with arch nemesis Roger Federer both bowed out in the late rounds of the tournament, resulting in a new Champion, Novak Djokovic being crowned. With Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray apparently back on top of the world, where does this leave one of the greatest rivalries in sports?
Over the last decade no rivalry in sports has been as competitive and professional as that of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer’s. On the one hand, fans of Rafael Nadal have come to love the intense, focused style of play that has led to many thrilling victories. Nadal can be best compared to a small market baseball team that after years of mastering their craft is finally at their peak point. Meanwhile, Roger Federer can be best described as the New York Yankees or Los Angeles Lakers of the tennis world, as he has simply been dominant and has built various chapters to his ongoing dynasty.
For instance, during the 2009 – 10 tennis tournament seasons, Nadal spent much of the time on the sidelines nursing a knee injury. However, during that time Federer essentially dominated the ranks, winning tournament after tournament with no rival in sight. Nadal similar to the Tampa Bay Rays of 2008, seemed to come out of nowhere in 2010 to take several of Federer’s championships en route to a chance at winning the Australian Open in 2011. Despite not doing so, these two combatants proved that tennis and sports in general needs a rivalry like theirs more than ever.
Australian Open Preview
on Jan.12, 2011, under Australian Open Odds
The 2011 Australian Open betting lines are receiving a lot of action, as in only a few days the first leg of the tennis Grand Slam will begin. This year’s tournament runs from January 17th to January 30th from Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia. Here is a preview of the upcoming tournament which you can bet online.
Tennis fans from around the world will see a changing of the guard in the ladies division of the Australian Open this season. Last year’s Champion, the legendary Serena Williams had to pull out of the tournament due to a foot injury. Therefore, fans can now expect a new champion to be crowned come January 30 when the tournament concludes. What’s more, bettors can expect new champions in the ladies doubles division of the tournament since the Williams sisters won the event last year.
In the men’s division, the 2010 tournament was won by whom else, Roger Federer. Last year, Federer beat British powerhouse Andy Murray in the finals of the Australian Open. However, heading into this year’s tournament, Murray has dropped from third in the world all the way down to fifth. Despite the ranking, Murray will look to avenge his loss to Federer at last season’s tournament.
The Australian Open as we noted earlier is the first major tournament of the year. As a result, all of the elite tennis stars take to the hard courts in order to prove their dominance and collect the prize for winning the tournament. Winners at the Australian Open can expect to win the lowest amount of any of the four Grand Slam Tournaments, as the winning purse is only $2.2 million.
This year’s tournament will also see the return of Rafael Nadal to the hard court. Last year, Nadal was still recovering from knee surgery as the tournament occurred.
Top Tennis Players Of 2010
on Dec.15, 2010, under Australian Open Odds
Aside from the NFL and NBA, tennis has taken over as the third most popular online betting niche in the world. With the 2010 tennis betting online season wrapping up, it is time to consider which stars were the top players of the year. Here is our list of the top three male tennis superstars of 2010.
- Novak Djokovic – 2010 was an incredible season for the young Serbian. The biggest moment of Djokovic 2010 campaign was during the semi finals of the US Open back in August, as he was able to upset Roger Federer. Along with his US Open victory over Federer, Djokovic also made the semi finals at Wimbledon, quarterfinals at the French Open and lost in the Grand Tour finals after being up by a set to eventual champion Federer.
What’s more, Djokovic was an integral piece to the Serbian squad at the Davis Cup championships. The Serbian team defeated France in a come from behind win three to two. Also it should be noted that for the third year in a row Djokovic was ranked third in the world by the ATP.
- Roger Federer - 2010 was a year of many peaks and valleys for Federer, as on the one hand he was quite dominant but on the other he suffered quite a few losses. Perhaps the biggest upset of the 2010 tennis season came at the expense of Federer, as he lost both his number one ranking and chance to repeat as champion of the French Open, when he lost to giant killer Robin Soderling.
Soderling has knocked off both Federer and Nadal in his career; however he subsequently ended up losing to both Federer and Nadal in the finals of the French Open. Aside from the shocking defeat at Rolland Garros, Federer also lost several warm up tournaments this season, that in year past he had dominated.
- Raphael Nadal - The young Spaniard returned to the tennis world with a vengeance in 2010. Returning from a season long knee injury, Nadal absolutely dominated the clay season. Formerly his Achilles heel and Federer’s advantage, Nadal made sure that the clay courts would not be his demise in 2010.
Nadal And Federer Dream Matchup
on Dec.01, 2010, under Australian Open Odds
Whether you own a sportsbook or just enjoy betting on tennis, you have likely been spoiled by the amount of profit made on the greatest individual matchup in the history of sports. While many critics from around and outside the world of sports cite various other rivalries, none have matched up to Nadal vs. Federer. Going into the ATP tennis tournament to determine who the best player of 2010 is, the possibility still remains that Nadal and Federer will meet again for another glorious battle.
Magic vs. Bird, Habs vs. Leafs, Canada vs. Russia, ever since 1970 sports fans have been a part of some of the greatest rivalries to ever take place. However, none are on the same level as Raphael Nadal and Roger Federer. Now to be fair, neither Nadal nor Federer actually hate each other on the same level as these other rivals do. Nevertheless, when it comes to the greatest individual rivalry of all time, we are a part of it right now, as no two players have been so close in wins and losses against one another than these two tennis super stars.
Over the last couple of years, Nadal and Federer have met in the finals on a rather inconsistent basis. For example, for the 2009 tennis season, Nadal missed the majority of it with a knee injury, and as a result Federer essentially cruised to a grand slam title uncontested. Yet in May when Nadal returned to action, he proved that even with a year layoff, he still had the capabilities to overthrow Federer as the top seed in the world.
The duo would face off in May at the Spanish Masters, with Nadal proving his dominance by winning the match. Now seven months later, the most anticipated rematch in sports history will take place, but who will win?
Tennis Power Rankings
on Nov.17, 2010, under Australian Open Odds
In a rather surprising move, the second biggest area of business for sports wagering sites aside from the NFL is that of tennis. With the recent power ranking coming out for Men’s tennis, there is much to be excited about when betting on tennis as for the first time in years players not named Nadal and Federer enter the top five rankings. Here is a list of this year’s top three male tennis rankings.
- Robin Soderling - The big Swede has had an incredible run over the last two years as he has defeated both Nadal and Federer on numerous occasions. He absolutely stole the show at the French Open and the Masters tournaments held in Paris this year.
In order to close out 2010 and determine who the best male tennis star is, Soderling along with seven others will compete in a tournament find a winner. Soderling reached his first Masters ATP 1000 win a few weeks ago and is one of the favorites to win the tournament outright.
- Roger Federer - Federer although remaining in a high rank has had an interesting campaign in 2010. Over his last four tournaments, Federer has come back to life as opposed to winning all four, he only won two of the four which by his standards can be considered disappointing.
While the outdoor season was a challenge for Federer, he has been brilliant indoors, save for his most recent loss. No matter, Federer has been the top ranked male tennis star for the last few years and does not appear to be slowing down any time soon. With the upcoming tournament between the top eight ranked tennis stars getting underway in a matter of days, look for Federer to continue his dominance.
- Gael Monfils - Monfils has had a brilliant 2010 season, capping it off with a narrow loss to all world tennis star Roger Federer at the Masters in Paris late last month. Monfils is full of self confidence and amazing skill. He should be able to finally get over the hump and prove to be the ultimate tennis star at this year’s tournament to determine the best of 2010.
Looking At The Top Ranking For WTA
on Nov.03, 2010, under Australian Open Odds
Whereas most tennis betting enthusiasts have come to associate the top rankings of professional tennis with Nadal and Federer, many have only associated women’s tennis with one woman, Serena Williams. Over the decade, no female tennis star has dominated the online betting scene the way that Williams has.
Throughout the years, Serena Williams has accumulated 13 Grand Slam titles, and defeated some of the legends of female tennis. Nevertheless, although she is considered to be the Nadal or Federer of women’s tennis, Williams has only been the top star for an astound 123 weeks.
Now 123 weeks or close to five months, is nothing to criticize when you look at it in perspective. For instance, Williams 123 weeks is six weeks more than the legendary Justine Henin and 25 more weeks then Lindsay Davenport. However, with the recent rankings coming out showing relative unknown Dinara Safina as the number one, many are wondering if Williams can return to the glory of earlier this year.
Serena Williams as we’ve already established is a future hall of fame tennis star. From her 13 Grand Slam titles, to absolute dominance of the sport over the last 13 years, Williams has provided betting fans with the ability to be the safest wager on the board.
However, all appeared to be going well for the legendary star, prior to this year’s French Open. At Rolland Garros, Williams finally lost a match after year of success. Since then, it has been a steady decline from the pinnacle of the Tennis world, to the lower echelon of the top 10 stars.
Her play in recent months has appeared unmotivated and many ponder if she can revitalize herself and get back to being the star she was to begin the year.
Nadal And Federer The Greatest Rivalry Of All Time?
on Oct.20, 2010, under Australian Open Odds
Sports wagering sites have long boasted better lines on classic rivalries in all sports, whether it be the Maple Leafs against the Canadians or Yankees facing the Mets. However, one sports betting online rivalry that is overlooked, is that of Raphael Nadal and Roger Federer.
When it comes to tennis handicapping, many fans are faced with the difficult question of what exactly is the best rivalry in the sport. For the longest time many believed it was Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, or Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe. However, since 2004, no rivalry in tennis has been fiercer than that of Nadal and Federer. Perhaps the most impressive feat of this rivalry is the fact that each player is the other’s arch nemesis.
For instance, in 2009 and part of 2010, there was considered to be no greater male tennis star than Roger Federer. During this year and a half of tennis tournaments, Federer had gone largely uncontested since his rival Nadal was out with a knee injury. Yet now that Nadal is back, he has regained his number one rank as male tennis best star. What’s more, he did so with a bang, by returning at the French Open and winning on the clay court for the first time in his career.
To put this in perspective, take the Agassi and Sampras rivalry previously mentioned. During their illustrious highly profiled rivalry, Agassi was always able to win the grand slams, while Sampras was fierce at serving and winning on grass courts. When it came to the French Open, Sampras could never do so as he never made it past the fourth round.
As we look at the storied Nadal and Federer rivalry, since 2004, Federer always appeared to be the better player because he could win and Rolland Garros. This past May however, Nadal finally got the monkey off his back, and now appears to be as good if not better than rival Federer.
Tennis Struggling In America
on Oct.07, 2010, under Australian Open Odds
Tennis betting fans should be concerned by Andy Roddick’s quarterfinal defeat at the Australian Open back in August. The defeat was a shocking revelation for many sports betting fans around the world, as that is the farthest any American born male tennis star has gotten in 2010. In years past Roddick and fellow Americans Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras took the tennis world by storm, winning a plethora of championships. Yet in 2010, tennis bettors and critics are posing the question, what other American tennis star’s aside from Roddick are there?
Earlier this year, American Sam Querrey was able to reach the fourth round at both Wimbledon and the US Open, yet was unable to advance in either scenario. Roddick remains as the best American in professional tennis today, and although that is nice, it is alarming how wide the talent gap is in the USA.
Aside from Querrey and Roddick, one other American born tennis star that was newsworthy in 2010 was John Isner. Isner as many will recall was one of the two participants in that three day marathon match at Wimbledon. Unfortunately, although Isner won the match, he had to play the very next day against a well rested opponent. As one can imagine, Isner was defeated in a short amount of time.
What is more astounding about Roddick’s early exit at the Australian Open two months ago is that it wasn’t even 15 years ago when four Americans made it to the semi finals of the same tournament. Roddick this year was the only American to even play in the tournament, a far cry from as recent as five years ago.
With the recent dominance by European stars, Raphael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Djokovic it appears American tennis players are uninterested in turning professional.
